Study Abroad Scholarship at the Cemanahuac Educational Community in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Barbara King Metuchen Public School District Metuchen, NJ 2019 America Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) Scholarship Winner
This past summer, I was selected by the AATSP Awards Selection Committee for a Study Abroad Scholarship at the Cemanahuac Educational Community in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Cuernavaca is the capital and the largest city of the state of Morelos, and is known as the “City of Eternal Spring.” It is located approximately 90 minutes south of Mexico City.
In addition to taking Spanish classes, the Cemanahuac program offered several field trips to places such as Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul, the colonial Silver City of Taxco, the cliff-encircled village of Tepotzlan and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon at Teotihuacan. During my three weeks in Cuernavaca, I lived with a Mexican family which provided more opportunities to be immersed in the Spanish language.
Thank you AATSP for this wonderful immersion experience in Cuernavaca! I plan to share all of my experiences with my students so that they may have a better understanding and appreciation for the language, customs and culture of Mexico.
